What is nesting?
Nesting, or nested-based manufacturing, is used in woodworking to cut and divide wood or wood-based panel materials efficiently, typically using a CNC machine. Nesting can offer advantages over conventional panel dividing or cutting, especially for chipboard, MDF and solid wood.
The high-quality surface and static properties of wood-based materials can present a challenge when cutting parts to size. However, nesting significantly simplifies this process, especially when there are many small parts with different shapes.
By using a nesting plan when cutting panels, the individual shapes are arranged in such a way that material waste is minimized - thereby achieving maximum material utilization.
Nesting in furniture production: efficient use of materials and resources
Nesting is crucial for optimizing material consumption and resource efficiency in furniture production. Nesting is an intelligent process for arranging parts on panel material. It optimizes material use, reduces waste, and thus maximizes yield. Nesting has many advantages, including cost savings, reduced waste and increased productivity.
Optimal use of raw materials:
Nesting allows you to maximize your material yield and therefore make the best use of your raw materials. By cleverly arranging the furniture parts on the panel, waste is minimized and material yield is increased, which not only reduces material costs but also improves production profitability. The efficient use of materials through nesting helps to reduce waste, which is economical and environmentally friendly.
Improve productivity:
This optimization increases productivity as less material needs to be cut and processed. Our individual, partially and fully automated production concepts increase the productive time of the machine and reduce staff usage. With less manual handling compared to conventional part solutions, there are fewer errors in the production process and less damage to the component.
Lean production:
Nesting also helps you to make your production lean. The complete processing of components reduces waiting times, transportation and space requirements. Combine steps such as dividing, milling and drilling in one process. This makes your processes more efficient. You eliminate the need to transport components between machines and can use the saved space for other purposes. You benefit from the generally high dimensional and angular accuracy of a machining center, which offers you process reliability for subsequent steps such as edge banding.
Flexible:
With a nesting CNC machining center in your production, you are well positioned for the future. In addition to dividing raw panels, you also have the option of processing individual parts on vacuum clamps. Whether stairs, doors or other components. The use of a 5-axis spindle for more complex applications can also prepare you for future requests from your customers or open up new areas of business for you.
The implementation of nesting is supported by our software, which calculates the optimum arrangement of the furniture parts and thus saves time and material costs.
Nesting: solutions and challenges in furniture production
Nesting is an important technology for modern furniture production that offers many advantages. However, there are also challenges that need to be overcome. These include complex calculations, taking into account special material features such as grain and texture, and adapting to changing production requirements.
To meet these challenges, it is important that your employees are always up to date and receive continuous training so that cutting is continuously improved and optimized.
Nesting helps to minimize material waste, maximize resource efficiency and increase your company's competitiveness. Through the intelligent use of software solutions and continuous improvement processes, you as a furniture manufacturer can take full advantage of nesting and drive your sustainable development.

Nesting: one process - many possibilities...
The classic areas of application for nesting are in the production of carcass furniture, in dividing and finishing cabinet door fronts and in furniture construction.
Carcass furniture
- Creating components for carcass furniture construction
- Milling of all components required for a carcass
- Drilling and grooving in a single pass
- Horizontal drilling also possible thanks to clamping devices
- Particularly suitable for small parts with different shapes
Furniture fronts
- Fast dividing and finishing of furniture fronts from a single workpiece - in a single operation!
- Thanks to the possibility of using units, you are highly flexible in further processing
Frame furniture
- Processing for frame furniture construction
- High degree of utilization thanks to easy handling of "free" moulded parts
In addition
- Creation of components for caravan and facade construction
- Various options for automating material handling ensure high time savings and even more effective work
Our nesting machines and software enable cut-optimized processing and dividing of panel materials on our CNC processing centers. Whether with 3-, 4- or 5-axis technology. Cutting, drilling and routing of any shape in just one operation!
This allows you to achieve optimum material utilization.
