Burger Küchen is part of the Baumann Group and produces 500 kitchens a day at its site in Burg, to the very best quality. Depending on the customer's wishes and vision, the kitchen can be a compact comfort zone, a large space with an island, or even a feel-good oasis for evenings shared with lovely guests.

The successful owner-managed company from Saxony-Anhalt employs some 680 staff and creates its wide variety of kitchens mainly using solutions from the HOMAG Group.

Anyone who produces 500 individual kitchens on a daily basis needs to be able to manage a huge range of finishes, components and the different variants that are used in the kitchen. Condensing this range is no easy task, which is why at the beginning of its batch size 1 production, Burger relies on a STORETEQ S-500 area storage system with two bridges. The version with two bridges was essential for Burger because two SAWTEQ B-320 flexTec machines are connected to the storage facility and storage and pre-picking operations have to be completed at the same time. The two SAWTEQ B-320 flexTec machines can work together on one cutting pattern. This makes it even more important for both to be continuously supplied with material.

For Martin Schockwitz it was the right decision: "It really is possible to divide the panel so that there's not much left over. If there is anything left over, we've integrated an intelligent offcuts storage system that uses a SORTBOT R-300 robot management to pick up these panel offcuts and place them in compartments. The next cutting operation can then of course be supplied from this system."

Once cut, the parts run into a SORTEQ H-600 decoupling buffer that temporarily buffers the material in layers and forwards it to the edge circuit, which consists of two EDGETEQ S-800 edge banding machines with LOOPTEQ C-700. "The components that go into this edge circuit have to pass through it twice and are then finished because all four sides have been processed, the corresponding edges have been glued on and the component has the correct angles and dimensions," explains Martin Schockwitz.

Once edged, the parts are drilled. Just like clockwork, two fully redundant drilling cells consisting of an ABF 600 with a robot and carriage management system process every component reliably. The system uses the ID on every component to automatically detect which bore holes are required in each case. Once drilled, the components merely have to be assembled. Burger does this using three assembly lines arranged in parallel. Precise machines take over most of the work steps here too, bringing the single parts together to create harmonious kitchen elements. The final step is packaging and loading, after which the cabinets can start their journey to the many customers as Burger kitchen furniture.

Martin Schockwitz: "With the first plant in 2015, a textbook project, not only did we have an excellent from the plant manufacturer HOMAG but our own people were fully integrated too. We were able to complete acceptance—which we had planned one year in advance—on the very day it was scheduled; it really was textbook. I'm currently really very happy with how the unit costs have developed — that's what shows us whether we've planned and invested correctly. In recent years, Burger has become increasingly faster than other companies, and I think that's the key to our success."
